Dr. Edward Schleyer Joins Coastal Orthopedic Associates

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

Coastal Orthopedic Associates of Beverly is proud to welcome orthopedic surgeon Dr. Edward Schleyer to their practice.

Dr. Schleyer specializes in pediatric, adolescent, and adult orthopedic surgery, with a clinical expertise in sports medicine and trauma surgery of the knee, hip, shoulder, and ankle. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive arthroscopy and cartilage preservation surgery.

Dr. Schleyer grew up in the seacoast region of New Hampshire, and completed his undergraduate studies at Amherst College, pursuing both a BA in political science and a pre-medical course load. He then attended Drexel University College of Medicine, where he earned placement into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. During his orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Buffalo, Dr. Schleyer earned awards for excellence as an educator and has since been active in orthopedic research, presenting at national research meetings.

Following residency, Dr. Schleyer completed two fellowships: first in pediatric sports medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, then in adult sports medicine at the University of Buffalo. This afforded him the unique opportunity to study with renowned mentors at both institutions—including Dr. Lyle Micheli, Dr. Mininder Kocher, and Dr. Les Bisson—in order to establish additional subspecialty expertise uniquely focused on the care of children, adolescents, and adults with sports- and trauma-related injuries. He has cared for athletes and performers at all levels, including members of the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Ballet, Babson College, Buffalo State University, Erie County College, Nobles and Greenough High School, and the Boston Marathon.

Dr. Schleyer’s interest in sports medicine began when he sustained his own sports-related injury, tearing his ACL. Personally feeling the sensation of instability, being wheeled into an operating room, enduring the rehab, skiing on a knee that doesn’t feel quite like the other—all have proven invaluable, both in his understanding of the condition itself as well as in discussions with patients who, like he, are looking for answers. His motivation for pursuing sports medicine finds its roots in having experienced first-hand the entire process of injury, education, operative intervention, rehabilitation, and return to play, all while working with an excellent surgeon. He aspires to help his patients with that process in the same fashion.

Dr. Schleyer understands the physical and psychological complexities of injuries, particularly in pediatric and adolescent athletes. Sports and recreational activities provide social, emotional, and physical development, leadership skills, and encouragement for children to work as a part of a team. Dr. Schleyer has dedicated himself to addressing sports injuries in the context of these important issues and strives to return his patients back to their sports and activities as quickly and as safely possible, minimizing the risk of future injury, and prioritizing their long-term health and well-being.

*Dr. Schleyer will be joining Coastal Orthopedic Associates in September 2019. Patients may begin booking appointments with him in August 2019. For more information, visit www.coastal-ortho.com.
